The SmartMove (SM) position controller was available in two versions: SM1 for free-standing cutters (no infeeder) & SM2 for combination machines (cutter & infeeder).
Unfortunately the SM board had a fatal design flaw; when the back-up battery failed the operating program was lost.
Due to the age of these SM boards, it is now almost impossible to re-install the program (the software is MS-DOS based). The only realistic option is often to scrap the machine.
Current EN safety regulations make any refurbishment unviable. Basically the entire electrical panel, control panel, servo drive system, PLC & safety circuits would need to be removed & replaced with modern components. The costs would be excessive & probably exceed the cost of buying a new machine.
